Prayer

What is Prayer?

Prayer is a way of communicating with, and learning more about, God. You are able to bring your gratitude, worries, fears, frustrations and joys to God in prayer. This builds and strengthens your relationship with God, a firm foundation on which to stand in the face of life’s ups and downs. Answers to prayer are not always what we expect, but God does listen, and will answer at the right time, at the right place and in the right way – many folk can testify to living through the most difficult life crises and not knowing where God is, but finding in time that God can and does redeem our circumstances, often in the most unexpected and beautiful ways.

Prayer in the Team Parish of Dewsbury

Prayer is an important part of the Team Parish of Dewsbury, the spiritual foundations of the town have been built through Christian prayer and worship for centuries. The Team Parish offers prayer support to anyone, and you can make a request anytime via our contact form, or popping into one of our churches when they are open, and asking any of our staff or volunteers.

We welcome your prayers for Dewsbury Minster, St Johns and Holy Trinity, for all who visit each church, that through the power of God’s Holy Spirit, each place may be used for the building up of God’s kingdom here on earth, that actively loves and cares for our local communities.

Ways to Pray

PreparationPrayer

Sit or kneel quietly for a few moments; let the bustle and worries of life fall away from you and let the peace of the stillness and the presence of God overshadow you.

You are God’s child; God loves you;
He created you; He longs for you.

He is here with you now and will be with you always.
Speak to him slowly and thoughtfully.

Prayer

Say this prayer to concentrate your mind with God:

Lord, overshadow me with your spirit. Banish distraction, inattention, coldness and concern. Make my eyes to see, my ears to hear, my tongue to speak, my soul to be still. And then, Lord, in your mercy, hear my prayer and give me your peace through Jesus Christ. Amen.

You can use these headings and and prayers to help focus your prayers:

For your love

For Jesus
For the good things of my life
For the people I love and who love me
For your world
Father, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your loving kindness and goodness; may I show forth your praise not only with my lips but in my life, for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

Lord I am sorry…
For every word spoken in haste or in thoughtless passion

For every failure of self-control
For every unkind deed
For breaking your laws

Lord, humbly and sincerely I ask for your forgiveness in the knowledge that in Jesus you have reached out and called me to yourself with love and forgiveness. Amen.

Lord I am troubled…
I am anxious and distressed about ……………………………….

Help me to trust in your love
Teach me to act and speak in the way you want

Lord, calm my fears and strengthen my heart that I may know that you are always there to help and turn to. Amen.

Lord, I pray for….
My family……………………………………..and friends

My neighbours ……………………………those I dislike, those I like
The sick, especially……………………………………………………
Those who suffer violence

Father, to your loving guardianship and care I commit those for whom I pray today. Be with them in their several needs and give them all the blessing of love, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
