Music and Faith

Music has always been a part of the Christian faith as a way of expressing gratitude and praise to God in Worship. It can also reflect stories from the Bible, times when life is difficult for us, and how God works in our lives. Each of the churches in the Team Parish has it’s own style of musical worship, from traditional to modern, using organ, piano and choir. We always welcome musicians to join us and add to the musical worship of each church.

Music at The Minster

As a “Mother Church of West Yorkshire”, Dewsbury Minster has a long and noble musical heritage, which is acknowledged and greatly respected in The Diocese of Leeds and beyond. We are pleased to share our music through worship and entertainment. You are warmly invited to join us for worship at 10.30a.m. or 6.30p.m. Sundays, and you can keep up to date with other musical event via the Events Diary and Minster News pages.

Taking Part

New members are welcome to join us, so if you sing or play a musical instrument, please do not hesitate to get in touch via the Contact Form and remember to leave a telephone number, and address your enquiry to Malcolm Spink, our Organist and Choir Master. Practices are held fortnightly on Monday evenings at 7.30pm, at the Minster.

Notable Events

Affiliated to and working with the R.S.C.M, The Minster has hosted an ‘Eat Meet and Sing’ event where Gordon Appleton promoted choral liturgy settings and extended our own, well-loved, portfolio.

For eleven years, The Minster hosted the Annual Dewsbury Festival of Christian Music, which attracted prominent choirs, solo artistes and distinguished musicians from around the country. It has also featured on BBC’s Songs of Praise, as well as national and local radio.

The acoustics of the building are widely acclaimed and some of the region’s most eminent organists have given Organ Recitals here.

Supriya Nagarajan

Musica Mirfield Swing Band and the Roberttown Pop Choir

Dewsbury Minster plays an active role in the civic and cultural life of the town and regularly hosts greatly appreciated concerts and musical evenings in partnership with The Town Centre Management, Local Area Committee and the Mayoral office. For example in 2004: ‘An Edwardian Extravaganza Evening’ to celebrate the Centenary of the Market Hall in Dewsbury and ‘Lest We Forget’ a Concert for Remembrance tide in the presence of The Mayor of Kirklees.

More recently we have enjoyed hosting concerts led by Musica Mirfield Swing Band and the Roberttown Pop Choir, and Supriya Nagarajan of Manasamitra.

Following on from the extensive work of Stephen Parker, our former Organist and Choir Master, Malcolm Spink (Organ Builder, Composer, Organist, Pianist, and Choral Singer) kindly took on the role in November 2017.
